The process of transferring the wreckage of the Air India Boeing 787 that crashed on June 12 onto a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad entered its third day on Tuesday, officials confirmed.
Gujarat police began moving the debris on Sunday, transporting it by trucks from the crash site in Meghaninagar to the GUJSAIL (Gujarat State Aviation Infrastructure Company Limited) building located within the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport premises.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Sector 2), Jaipal Singh Rathore, said that the wreckage will be handed over to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is conducting the official probe into the crash.
“The operation to shift the wreckage to the GUJSAIL facility began on June 22. While progress has been steady, recent rainfall has caused some delays,” said Rathore, adding that the task would be completed soon.
The cockpit voice recorder of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner were recovered from the debris a few days after the crash.
In addition to the AAIB’s investigation, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting a parallel international inquiry into the accident.
A total of 270 people lost their lives in the tragedy, including 241 passengers and crew. One passenger survived the crash.
As of now, 259 of the deceased have been identified through DNA analysis and facial recognition. Authorities have handed over 256 bodies to their families, officials said.
