ROME — An American Airlines transatlantic flight ended in tragedy on Thursday morning when a male passenger passed away following a mid-air medical emergency, despite the desperate efforts of five physicians on board to save his life.

American Airlines Flight AA52, operated by a Boeing 777-200ER (registration N755AN), departed with a delay of one hour from Miami International Airport on the evening of Wednesday, August 26, 2026. Following a eight-hour flight cruising at 38,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean, the aircraft began its final descent into Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO).

As the widebody jet made its approach into the Italian capital, flight crew members faced a severe medical crisis in the cabin. A male passenger suffered a sudden medical event, prompting the cabin crew to issue an urgent call for medical professionals on board. Five doctors who happened to be passengers stepped forward, working together to perform life-saving resuscitation efforts mid-flight.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the flight crew declared an official emergency by squawking code 7700—the international transponder code signaling an immediate general emergency—to request priority handling and expedited routing from air traffic control.

Flight AA52 touched down safely on Runway 16R at Rome Fiumicino at approximately 11:30 CEST on Thursday, August 27, where local emergency medical services were pre-positioned and waiting on the tarmac.

According to source, despite the immediate intervention by the five onboard doctors and waiting medical personnel upon landing, the passenger was pronounced dead.
