Data from flight recorders of the Air India Boeing 787 have been downloaded in New Delhi, Indian investigators said Thursday.
Although the flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR) were damaged in the crash of Air India AI171, authorities were able to retrieve usable data.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) managed to safely extract the Crash Protection Module (CPM) and memory components, successfully downloading all recorded data.
Last week, sources indicated that the government might send the FDR and CVR to the United States for forensic data recovery. However, the flight recorders, recovered on 13 and 16 June, were only flown to the AAIB lab in New Delhi on 24 June.
The government stated that both black boxes—one found on the rooftop of the college hostel struck by the aircraft and the other recovered from the crash debris—were brought to the AAIB laboratory in New Delhi on Tuesday. Data extraction was completed the same day.
