Under a cloud of intense geopolitical tension, Iran’s national football team has officially touched down in North America for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, landing just meters from the United States border following an arduous, multi-stop international journey.
TIJUANA, Mexico — The squad’s arrival in Tijuana concludes a logistical marathon that began on Monday morning, May 18, 2026, when the team departed Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran, according to the Tasnim News Agency.
From Iran, the team first traveled to Turkey, landing at Antalya Airport later that afternoon. International media captured the squad filing out of the terminal in matching navy blue or black tracksuits, pulling their luggage before boarding waiting buses to a secluded training camp.
After weeks of preparation in Antalya, the final leg of their journey began on Saturday, June 6. The team boarded an Airbus A340-313 (registration D-AUSC), departing Antalya Airport (AYT) and heading west toward Santiago de Compostela (SCQ) in northwestern Spain. The aircraft touched down briefly at 22:10 local time for a quick 45-minute refueling stop before launching across the Atlantic Ocean.
Following a grueling 13-hour transatlantic flight, the Iranian delegation arrived in Tijuana, Mexico. The choice of landing location highlights the severe diplomatic friction and strict visa regulations that have complicated Team Melli’s travel arrangements ahead of the tournament.
Tijuana International Airport (TIJ) is uniquely situated immediately adjacent to the United States–Mexico border. The airport’s proximity is so extreme that the northern end of its 2,000-meter runway sits less than 100 meters (about 330 feet) south of the border wall, meaning departing aircraft often enter U.S. airspace immediately upon takeoff.
Despite intense political scrutiny surrounding the team’s participation, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has repeatedly reaffirmed that Iran would compete, emphasizing football’s ability to transcend global divides.
Iran is slated to play its first two Group Stage matches just across the border in Inglewood, California. They will open their campaign against New Zealand on June 15, before facing Belgium six days later. The team will then travel north to Seattle to close out the group stage against Egypt on June 26.
In a twist that tournament organizers and political analysts are already watching closely, a historic matchup on American soil could be on the horizon. If both Iran and the United States finish second in their respective groups, the geopolitical rivals are on a direct collision course to meet in the Round of 32 on July 3 in Arlington, Texas.
