A Delta Boeing 717 was forced to return to Atlanta after a ceiling panel fell on passengers during flight to Chicago.

A Delta Air Lines flight Atlanta to Chicago returned to ATL 58 minutes after departure due to a ceiling panel incident.

A Reddit user shared the details of the flight telling it happened at takeoff. Crew told passengers it has wires that would need to be unplugged to remove but the attendants aren’t allowed to do that.

The 22 year-old Boeing 717 with registration N982AT was forced to return to Atlanta during this incident on April 14, 2025.

Delta’s Boeing 717 Fleet – Key Facts

As of early 2025, Delta operates around 64 Boeing 717-200s on short to medium-haul routes. Common Destinations include cities like Knoxville, Greenville, Savannah, Birmingham, and more.

Fleet Retirement Plans

Delta has been gradually phasing out the 717s as part of its fleet modernization. Replacement aircraft include the Airbus A220-100, which offers greater fuel efficiency and updated tech. Full retirement of the 717 fleet is expected by 2027.
