PARIS — An Air France long-haul flight bound for French Guiana turned back across the Atlantic today after the flight crew declared a mid-air emergency, triggering priority return protocols to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG).

Flight AF836 departed Terminal 2E, Gate L45, at Charles de Gaulle Airport at 10:25 CEST. Shortly after reaching its cruising altitude of 33,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean, the flight crew made the decision to abort the crossing roughly 90 minutes into the journey.

Upon changing course, the flight crew broadcasted a general emergency code—squawk 7700—on their transponder. The alert instantly signals ground-based Air Traffic Control (ATC) to grant priority routing, direct vectors, and emergency landing clearance.

Flight Profile & Aircraft Details

  • Flight: Air France AF836 (Paris CDG to Cayenne Félix Eboué Airport)
  • Aircraft: Boeing 777-200ER (Registration: F-GSPL)
  • Aircraft Age: 26 years
  • Cruising Altitude: 33,000 feet (FL330)
  • Status: Inbound return to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG)

Long-haul flights returning over the Atlantic often perform fuel-dumping procedures to safely drop below maximum landing weight before touchdown. Emergency ground services at CDG are routinely placed on standby for high-priority arrivals following 7700 transmissions.

Air France has not yet confirmed the specific nature of the onboard technical issue or medical emergency prompting the turn-around.
