BALTIMORE — An American Airlines flight bound for its destination late Thursday night was forced to make an emergency diversion to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) after a passenger’s escalating, violent outbursts compelled crew and bystanders to physically restrain him to his seat using duct tape and zip ties.
The 67-year-old Arizona man was taken into custody by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police immediately upon the aircraft’s landing at BWI around 10:15 p.m.
Flight AA618 was mid-transit when the individual reportedly began exhibiting increasingly chaotic, disruptive behavior. According to initial reports, the passenger grew verbally abusive toward flight attendants and surrounding travelers before the situation escalated into physical aggression.
Faced with a growing safety threat thousands of feet in the air, flight attendants and fellow passengers intervened, using zip ties to secure the man’s hands and heavy-duty duct tape to bind him to his seat to prevent further violence.
In a statement following the incident, American Airlines reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on inflight aggression, emphasizing that the safety and security of its customers and crew remain the airline’s highest priority. The airline also expressed gratitude to the flight crew for their swift and professional handling of the disruption.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched a formal investigation into the incident. Flight disruptions caused by unruly passengers carry severe consequences, including civil penalties from the FAA reaching up to $37,000 per violation, potential placement on airline no-fly lists, and federal criminal charges.
The passenger was taken into custody shortly after the plane reached the BWI gate. Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific charges he will face.
