A flight from Amsterdam to Mumbai is experiencing difficulties after takeoff.
The flight KL877 departed Amsterdam Schiphol at 12:03 CEST but stopped the climb at 6,000 feet due to a problem with left engine during takeoff.
The flight to Mumbai was scheduled to last 8 hours and 45 minutes.
The Boeing 777-300ER (registration PH-BVW) is currently burning/dumping fuel before a return.
Flames coming out of a plane engine during takeoff can happen for two main reasons:
- Compressor stall or surge
A disruption in airflow through the engine’s compressor, causing pressure imbalances. The engine may emit popping sounds, bangs, and flames from the intake or exhaust. - A bird trike
If a bird is sucked into a jet engine (especially a large bird or multiple birds). It can damage fan blades causing flames, bangs, or smoke.
