NEWARK, N.J. — A United Airlines flight bound for South Africa was forced to make an emergency diversion on Saturday after a passenger suffered a mid-flight medical emergency over two hours into the transatlantic journey.

United Flight UA1011, operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner (registration N26960), departed Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) from gate D21 at 7:30 PM EDT on Saturday, September 5, running approximately 45 minutes behind its scheduled departure time.

The widebody jet climbed to its cruising altitude of 35,000 feet and was en route to Cape Town when the crew was alerted to a medical issue on board. Nearly two hours into the flight, the pilots made the decision to turn around and head toward Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), a major East Coast hub and operational base for the airline.

As the aircraft neared the New York metropolitan area, the flight crew declared a formal emergency, broadcasting squawk code 7700 on final approach to ensure priority handling from air traffic control.

The Dreamliner landed safely at Newark 3 hours and 15 minutes after taking off from Washington, where medical personnel were waiting to assist the passenger.

Following a four-hour ground stop to accommodate medical responders, refuel, and update flight logistics, the aircraft resumed its journey to South Africa. The flight is expected to touch down at Cape Town International Airport at approximately 11:00 PM SAST.
