LOS ANGELES — A United Airlines flight bound for Newark Liberty International Airport was forced to declare an emergency and return to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) shortly after departure on Thursday, September 3 202 afternoon due to a hydraulic issue.
United Airlines Flight UA1855, operated by a 29-year-old Boeing 757-200 (registration N18119), took off from LAX Terminal 7 via Runway 25R, initially heading west before turning east and climbing toward a cruising altitude of 35,000 feet.
However, approximately 25 minutes into the flight, the aircrew encountered a technical issue, prompting them to declare an emergency. Air traffic control vectored the aircraft back toward Los Angeles for an immediate return.
The aircraft landed safely on Runway 25L roughly one hour after its initial takeoff and taxied to Gate 73 without further incident. No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.
United Airlines confirmed that the turnaround was caused by a maintenance issue. Passengers were deplaned at the gate and are scheduled to be re-accommodated on a replacement aircraft.
The flight’s departure time has been rescheduled for 5:30 PM local time, resulting in a delay of more than five hours for travelers.
