SmartLynx Airlines, a long-standing provider of ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) and charter services, announced on Monday, November 24, that it is immediately ceasing all commercial operations. The Latvia-based carrier, which has operated for more than 30 years, communicated the shutdown in an official statement, citing the results of a recent viability assessment.
“Today, we are sharing news that is difficult for all of us at SmartLynx Airlines,” the company said. “As of today, we will be ceasing our commercial operations.” Management emphasized that the decision was not taken lightly, but followed a comprehensive review of the airline’s financial health and long-term prospects.
SmartLynx had been part of Avia Solutions Group until the end of October, when it was sold to a consortium composed of company management and a Dutch investment fund. Its subsidiaries in Malta and Estonia were later transferred to the same consortium, according to information provided by Avia Solutions Group to Aviacionline.
Originally founded in 1992 as LatCharter, SmartLynx evolved into one of Europe’s key providers of outsourced airline capacity, serving major carriers and tour operators worldwide.
