Hurricane Gabrielle, now a powerful Atlantic storm, is moving rapidly eastward and is expected to strike the Azores before continuing on a path toward mainland Europe.

Caracas, 24 September 2025 — According to the National Hurricane Center and European meteorological agencies, Gabrielle is forecast to bring hurricane-force winds, torrential rainfall, and coastal flooding to parts of the Azores. Afterward, the system will likely weaken into a post-tropical cyclone as it nears Portugal and Spain, but forecasters warn it may still deliver damaging winds and heavy rain.

Storm Status

  • Category: Major hurricane
  • Winds: Up to 115 mph (≈185 km/h)
  • Movement: East-northeast at 25 mph (≈40 km/h)
  • Projected impact: Azores Thursday night into Friday; Portugal by Saturday

Gabrielle is the seventh named storm and the second major hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. The Azores rarely face direct hurricane impacts, making this trajectory especially concerning for local authorities and emergency planners.

Meteorologists note that, while Gabrielle will lose strength over cooler waters, it will still carry the potential to disrupt daily life in western Europe through the weekend.

As Gabrielle transitions eastward, forecasters will continue to refine its track and intensity forecasts. Residents of the Azores, Portugal, and Spain are urged to stay alert, as even a weakening storm can produce dangerous and disruptive conditions.
