WASHINGTON — The highly anticipated next generation of the U.S. presidential airlift fleet has broken cover. For the first time, the upcoming U.S. Air Force VC-25B presidential aircraft has been photographed showcasing its striking new executive livery.
The ground-breaking image, captured by aviation spotter Travis Ghormley and rapidly circulated across social media, offers the public an inaugural glimpse of the modified Boeing 747-8 Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) as it prepares to enter service.
The aircraft was photographed outside a modification facility in Texas, where it has been undergoing extensive systems integration and flight testing.
A Major Departure from Tradition
The newly captured photo marks a historic shift in American aviation iconography. For more than six decades, the aircraft serving as “Air Force One” have worn a distinctive luminous baby blue and white livery, a design originally shaped by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and industrial designer Raymond Loewy during the Kennedy administration.
The newly photographed VC-25B officially replaces that aesthetic with a bolder palette. The design features:
- A crisp stark white upper fuselage
- A deep navy blue underbelly
- A sharp gold and red cheatline (horizontal stripe) dividing the two primary colors down the center of the airframe
- A stylized waving American flag on the tail fin, replacing the traditional static flag design
This color scheme closely mirrors the design personal preference championed by President Donald Trump during his first term. While the Biden administration had briefly reverted to a modernized version of the classic Kennedy blue in 2023, the U.S. Air Force confirmed earlier this year that the dark blue, red, and gold palette would become the official fleet standard for executive transport.
The “Bridge” to the Future
The specific 747-8 BBJ captured in the photograph has a fascinating backstory. Unlike the two primary VC-25B aircraft currently being built from scratch by Boeing, this particular airframe is an interim “Bridge” aircraft.
Originally manufactured as a commercial VIP transport for the Qatari Royal Family, the luxury jumbo jet was transferred to the United States government. In mid-2025, the Pentagon launched an accelerated “full-court press” program with defense contractor L3Harris in Greenville, Texas, to modify the aircraft for presidential duties.
According to Air Force officials, this “Bridge” aircraft completed its rigorous structural modification and flight-testing phases in May. It was sent immediately into the paint hangar to receive the newly unveiled livery.
Overcoming Thermal Challenges
The introduction of the darker blue paint scheme required substantial engineering work behind the scenes. Originally, Air Force engineers warned that an entirely dark blue underbelly could absorb excess solar radiation, potentially causing interior temperatures to exceed the limits of highly sensitive, classified communication components.
To overcome this, engineers utilized advanced heat-reflective paint formulations and modified the aircraft’s internal environmental control systems to ensure the flying command post remains cool and fully operational under any climate conditions.
When Will It Fly the President?
The 89th Airlift Wing’s Presidential Airlift Group at Joint Base Andrews is scheduled to take formal delivery of this first VC-25B “Bridge” aircraft later this summer.
While it will immediately provide the White House with a massive upgrade in range, space, and modern capability over the aging 1990s-era VC-25A fleet (based on the older 747-200), it will eventually share the skies with two permanent, heavily armored VC-25B models currently slated for delivery in 2028.
