PHILADELPHIA — A Secret Service agent was hospitalized Friday following an accidental discharge of their service weapon at Philadelphia International Airport. The incident occurred while the agent was part of the security detail for former First Lady Jill Biden.
The discharge happened in a secure area of the airport as the detail was preparing for departure. According to law enforcement sources, the agent sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg.
Emergency medical services responded immediately to the scene. The agent, whose identity has not been released, was transported to a local hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Officials confirmed that the former First Lady was not in any danger during the incident. No bystanders or other members of the security detail were injured.
While accidental discharges within law enforcement are rare, they trigger a mandatory review process. The Secret Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility will examine the circumstances leading up to the discharge to determine if safety protocols were breached.
Operations at Philadelphia International Airport were not significantly disrupted, and the former First Lady’s travel schedule continued as planned following the incident.
