ATLANTA — A transatlantic Delta Air Lines flight bound for Scotland was forced to make an emergency return to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport late Wednesday night following a technical issue shortly after takeoff.
Delta flight DL34, scheduled from Atlanta (ATL) to Edinburgh (EDI), departed just before midnight on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. Minutes after lifting off from runway 27R, the crew of the Boeing 767-300ER halted their climb at approximately 10,000 feet, citing a suspected mechanical issue.
Flight tracking data showed the 27-year-old aircraft (registration N172DZ) entering a holding pattern near the airport. The crew declared an emergency (a standard procedure allowing air traffic control to grant priority routing) and circled for roughly an hour to dump fuel, reducing the widebody jet’s weight to ensure a safe landing.
The aircraft landed safely back at Hartsfield-Jackson without further incident and taxied under its own power back to Concourse E, Gate 11, where passengers safely deplaned.
Delta Air Lines confirmed the diversion was due to a mechanical issue and quickly mobilized to get passengers back on their way. The airline coordinated a replacement aircraft, rescheduling the flight to Edinburgh for a 1:12 a.m. departure.
