US Air Force fighter jets were scrambled to intercept Russian bombers approaching the US border, the Pentagon said.
The two Bear bomber jets and two Su-35 Flanker planes were detected some 50 miles from the coast of Alaska today as tensions continue to mount.
The Russian formation was intercepted by a pair of US Air Force F-22 stealth fighter jets that were on a routine patrol around 50 miles southwest of Chariot.
Officials said the Russian fighter jets were unarmed and remained in international airspace.
It was the first time the U.S. Air Force has seen advanced Russian Su-35 fighter jets escort Russian bombers near Alaska.
