TEHRAN — Iranian authorities have suspended all flights to and from airports across the western region of the country “until further notice,” according to a report by the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

The abrupt suspension, cited as a response to the “current security situation,” has fueled immediate speculation regarding heightened military readiness or potential regional escalations.

Conflicting Signals and Missing NOTAMs

Despite the report from Tasnim, which is closely affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), aviation tracking data and international flight monitors noted a bizarre discrepancy: no official Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) had been issued by Civil Aviation Organization authorities at the time of the announcement.

A NOTAM is the standard international communication tool used to alert pilots of potential hazards, airspace closures, or major operational changes.

What we know so far:

  • The Source: Tasnim news agency reported the grounding of flights across western Iran.
  • The Reason Given: An unspecified shift in the “current security situation.”
  • The Catch: No formal civil aviation NOTAM has been registered to legally close the airspace.

Regional Context

Local aviation sources suggest that while commercial radar shows a thinning of traffic over western provinces like Kermanshah and Kurdistan, some commercial airliners appear to still be utilizing established air corridors, suggesting the suspension may be rolling out unevenly or strictly affecting domestic hubs first.

Awaiting Official Clarity

Neither the Iranian Ministry of Roads and Urban Development nor the military command has issued an official statement to clarify the exact nature of the security threat.

Travelers scheduled to fly into or out of western Iranian hubs are being advised by local media to contact their airlines before heading to the airport, as the situation remains highly fluid and unconfirmed by international aviation bodies.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

UPDATE 19:20 UTC
Iran’s ISNA news: “The country’s flight conditions are normal and flights are operating as scheduled…Recent news about flight bans from tonight in the western part of the country is denied.”
