LOS ANGELES — Passengers aboard a United Airlines flight bound for the East Coast experienced a harrowing start to their journey today when their aircraft was forced to make an emergency return to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) following reports of an engine fire.
Flight UA2127, operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner (Registration: N24972), departed LAX earlier this afternoon en route to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Shortly after takeoff, the crew declared an emergency, reporting issues with one of the aircraft’s engines.

Rapid Return and Response
Ground witnesses reported seeing flashes near the wing as the aircraft climbed out of the Los Angeles basin. The flight crew acted quickly, leveling off and circling back to the airport.
The Dreamliner touched down safely on runway 25L just a short time later. However, the situation remained critical upon landing:
- Evacuation: Rather than taxiing to the gate, the aircraft stopped on the apron.
- Emergency Slides: Flight attendants deployed the emergency evacuation slides, and all passengers were instructed to exit the aircraft immediately onto the tarmac.
- First Responders: Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) crews were on standby and met the aircraft upon arrival to inspect the engine and ensure the site was secure.
Passenger Status
Initial reports from airport officials indicate that there were no major injuries during the evacuation, though several passengers were evaluated on-site for minor scrapes and the shock of the event.
Investigation Pending
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to investigate the incident. The aircraft, a centerpiece of United’s long-haul fleet, will remain grounded at LAX for a full mechanical inspection.
