All flights to New York JFK are suspended amid severe thunderstorms.
New York, September 6, 2025 — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a ground stop for all flights bound for New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), triggered by severe thunderstorms affecting the region, travel reports show.
The ground stop was implemented at 4:17 p.m. EDT and remains in effect until 7:00 p.m. as thunderstorms continued to disrupt operations across the New York metro area.
Flights airborne to New York JFK are diverting to Boston, Philadelphia and Washington Airports.
A ground stop is an air traffic control measure that halts departing flights headed to a specific airport—JFK in this case—to prevent inflight congestion and ensure safety during adverse conditions.
