LONDON — A transatlantic British Airways flight carrying hundreds of passengers from California endured an unexpected tour of England on Saturday morning after severe summer storms threw London’s airspace into gridlock.
Flight BA284, operated by one of the airline’s flagship Airbus A380 superjumbos, was forced to circle over Manchester and make an emergency diversion to Birmingham before finally completing its journey to London Heathrow.
Stormy Skies Block Capital Approach
The routine long-haul journey began on the afternoon of Friday, June 26, 2026, when the double-decker aircraft (registration G-XLEE) departed runway 28R at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
Following a smooth nine-hour cruise across the United States, Canada, and the Atlantic Ocean, the flight entered British airspace on Saturday morning and initiated its standard descent from 39,000 feet.
However, as the superjumbo neared its destination, air traffic controllers were dealing with a rapidly deteriorating weather situation over the south of England. Heavy thunderstorms and massive cumulonimbus clouds in the vicinity of London Heathrow had triggered strict air traffic regulations, causing severe arrival backlogs.
From Manchester Circles to a Birmingham Landing
With Heathrow’s holding patterns saturated, air traffic control vectored the massive aircraft hundreds of miles north toward Manchester. Passengers watched on flight trackers as the A380 entered a holding pattern at 20,000 feet, circling above Manchester for roughly 20 minutes while pilots monitored their remaining fuel.
Realizing that the London airspace would not clear in time, the flight crew declared a diversion to Birmingham Airport (BHX).
The aircraft touched down safely in Birmingham at 11:00 AM on Saturday, nearly 10 hours after its wheels left the tarmac in San Francisco. British Airways later confirmed the diversion, citing the localized severe weather systems.
A Short Hop Home
The diversion proved to be a brief intermission. After refueling on the ground in the West Midlands and waiting for a gap in the weather, the A380 departed Birmingham at approximately 1:00 PM.
The final leg of the journey was a remarkably brief 25-minute hop across the country. Flight BA284 finally touched down on the runway at London Heathrow shortly before 1:30 PM, ending a memorable, multi-stop transatlantic crossing for everyone on board.
