Drone sightings force shutdown at Sweden’s Landvetter Airport.
Air traffic at Gothenburg’s Landvetter Airport was abruptly halted on Tuesday evening after drones were reported flying in the immediate vicinity of the field, Swedish aviation authorities confirmed.
The suspension was ordered on short notice after multiple sightings placed the drones close enough to airport airspace to trigger a safety alarm. Aircraft already inbound were instructed to divert to nearby airports until the airspace could be cleared.
At least British airways flight BA792 from London Heathrow and Lufthansa flight LH181 from Frankfurt just diverted to Copenhagen, Denmark.
Operations will remain suspended until authorities confirm the area is secure; there was no timeline yet for reopening.
The incident comes amid heightened European sensitivity to unmanned aircraft operating near critical infrastructure and controlled airspace. Sweden has experienced periodic drone flyovers of sensitive sites in recent years — but the origin of the devices near Gothenburg tonight remains unknown.
