AUSTIN, Texas — A Delta Air Lines flight took an unusual path shortly after departing Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Saturday, August 15, 2026, giving a local family a backyard airshow they won’t soon forget.

Flight DL1982, operated by an Airbus A319 (registration N337NB), was climbing out of Austin when the captain made a brief, heartwarming detour from his standard departure procedure.

Recognizing that the flight path passed near his family’s neighborhood, the pilot contacted Air Traffic Control (ATC) with a special request: permission to level off at a lower altitude so his children could spot his plane from their backyard swimming pool.

“They’re excited to see Dad come over,” the pilot told the controller over the radio.

Given the clear sky and excellent visibility, the controller approved the maneuver, instructing the pilot to remain above 3,100 feet. Flight tracking data shows the A319 leveled off at approximately 3,900 feet as it swept past the neighborhood—a stark contrast to the flight’s routine cruising profile, which typically sees aircraft crossing that same area well above 11,000 feet.

After cruising low enough for his kids to catch a clear view of Dad at work, the pilot resumed his standard flight plan and safely climbed to cruising altitude to complete the scheduled journey to Los Angeles.
