United Airlines flight Boeing 777 diverted to San Francisco before resuming flight to Tokyo.
United Airlines flight UA803, operating from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Tokyo Haneda (HND), faced major disruption on Thursday, November 27, 2025, after the crew made the decision to divert mid-flight.
The Boeing 777-200ER (registration N69020) departed Washington as scheduled but, while cruising over Canada, the crew elected to reroute the aircraft to San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
United has not yet disclosed the specific reason for the diversion, but according to our sources, it was a technical issue with the aircraft.
Nine Hours in the Air Before Touching Down in San Francisco
UA803 landed safely in San Francisco approximately nine hours after departure. Passengers had to board another Boeing 777-200.
Following the extended stop, UA803 took off again from SFO, continuing on its long trek across the Pacific. At the time of writing, the flight is en route to Tokyo.
Arrival in Tokyo Expected Eight Hours Late
United Airlines said it expects the flight to arrive in Tokyo roughly eight hours behind schedule, turning what is normally a 13–14 hour nonstop service into a nearly 24-hour odyssey for passengers.
