Wizz Air has revealed that it will increase its presence at London Gatwick after successfully acquiring slots from Norwegian Air.
The low-cost carrier has acquired 15 pairs of daily slots at Gatwick airport from Norwegian Air Shuttle. Wizz Air has also allocated new aircraft to operate in and out of Gatwick.
Wizz Air UK will be operating from its London Gatwick base with five Airbus A321neo aircraft. Last year in October, Wizz Air launched its Gatwick base and only one Airbus aircraft was based. The airlines will base four more A321neo aircraft at the airport in spring 2022.
In a statement, Wizz Air Group Managing Director Jozsef Varadi said:
“The purchase of slots at Gatwick Airport will allow us to improve our presence and our competitive position in the London market. The 2022 season has the potential to be a great opportunity for aviation in the UK.”
The addition of slots and aircraft will increase frequency on existing seasonal leisure routes and facilitate the opening of additional routes.
Commenting on this news, Wizz Air’s CEO, József Váradi said:
“Acquiring airport slots at Gatwick Airport will enable us to enhance our presence and competitive position in the London market. We continue to develop our business in the United Kingdom and remain committed to making air travel affordable for all.”
