The Turkish Ministry of National Defence is investigating the origin of an unidentified unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that was shot down by fighter jets on the evening of December 15, 2025, after violating national airspace.
Radar Detection and Scramble
The incident began when early warning radar systems belonging to the Turkish Air Forces identified a suspicious air trail over the Black Sea moving toward Turkish territory. Once the object crossed the border, the Eskişehir Combat Air Force Command immediately scrambled F-16 fighter jets on a Quick Reaction Alert (QRA).
The F-16 pilots intercepted the object and identified it as an uncontrolled UAV. Following established rules of engagement, the fighters neutralized the vehicle using AIM-9X Sidewinder within-visual-range air-to-air missiles. The intercept took place approximately 120 kilometers from Ankara, the nation’s capital.
Civilian Flight Disruptions
The military operation necessitated immediate safety measures for civil aviation. During the interception and neutralization, arriving and departing flights at Ankara Esenboğa Airport were temporarily suspended. Normal flight operations resumed once the airspace was declared secure.
Investigation into Origin
While the Turkish Ministry of National Defence has confirmed the neutralization of the craft, they have not yet officially identified its type or country of origin. Given the trajectory from the Black Sea, aviation experts suggest the drone was likely of Russian or Ukrainian origin, possibly a stray unit from the ongoing conflict in the region.
Key Incident Details:
- Interceptor Aircraft: F-16 Fighting Falcon (Eskişehir Command)
- Weapon Used: AIM-9X Sidewinder
- Location of Neutralization: 120 km from Ankara
- Status: Wreckage currently being surveyed by the Air Forces
Military teams are currently working to recover and analyze the wreckage to confirm the drone’s model and determine whether the airspace violation was due to a technical malfunction or a deliberate path.
