A military operation was launched after ‘repeated violations of Polish airspace’, Prime Minister confirmed.
Warsaw, September 3, 2025 — Poland’s military said early Wednesday it had shot down drones that breached its airspace during a Russian strike on neighboring Ukraine — the first such action by Warsaw, marking a major escalation with implications for NATO.
“This is an act of aggression that posed a real threat to the safety of our citizens,” Poland’s Operational Command said in a statement on X.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed a military response operation was underway following “multiple violations of Polish airspace,” noting that “the military has used weapons against the objects.”
President Karol Nawrocki pledged firm action, writing on X: “The security of our homeland is our highest priority.” He said he would convene Poland’s National Security Bureau in the coming hours for a high-level briefing.
Airspace around Warsaw Chopin Airport was closed for a moment forcing flights to circled or divert to nearby airport.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions as Russia intensifies strikes on Ukraine, raising concerns of further spillover into NATO territory.
