MADRID – An Emirates Boeing 777-300ER traveling from Miami to Dubai was forced to declare an emergency and divert to Spain while cruising over European airspace early Saturday afternoon.
Flight Details and Timeline
Emirates flight EK214 departed Miami International Airport (MIA) on Friday, February 27, at 23:57 EST. The aircraft, registered as A6-EQC, was approximately nine hours into its scheduled 14-hour journey to Dubai International Airport (DXB) when the incident occurred.
The flight was cruising at an altitude of 31,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean and was just entering French airspace when the crew transmitted a Squawk 7700—the international code for a general emergency.
The Diversion
Shortly after declaring the emergency, flight tracking data showed the aircraft performing a sharp right turn away from its planned track toward the Middle East. Air traffic controllers coordinated a priority descent as the pilots set a course for Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD).
