Former Alitalia flight attendants undressed in a protest in the streets of Rome over job losses on Wednesday earlier this week.
The ex-Alitalia stripped off their uniforms in protest at the airline’s demise. The protest resulted after Unions failed to reach an agreement with ITA over labour terms for former Alitalia employees.
Only 3,000 of Alitalia’s employees were hired by ITA, leaving 7,000 employees without jobs. However, some of the hired employees have seen a significant drop in their wages.
As seen on the footage shared on the internet, the group of flight attendants initially revealed Alitalia’s uniform after removing their oversized overcoats.
They slowly stripped down to their camisoles and ended up joining hands and chanting “We are Alitalia.” in the famous Campidoglio piazza in Rome.
ITA bought Alitalia for €90 million on October 15th. The deal now ensures the 75-year-old airlines’ identity lives on, although the purchase price was down from the original €290 million ($336 million) asking price.
ITA is hoping to turn it profitable by maintaining a leaner workforce and operation than that of Alitalia. The new carrier will have 52 aircraft and around 2,800 employees. The Italian government will invest €1.35 billion ($1.57 billion) in the new airline.
