MONTREAL — An Air Canada flight from Phoenix to Montreal proceeded normally on Sunday after a female U.S. citizen requested asylum mid-flight, prompting brief communication between the flight crew and ground operations.
Air Canada Flight AC1730 departed Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Sunday, September 20, 2026, bound for Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL). During the flight, the flight crew alerted operations that a female passenger seated in Row 14 was exhibiting unusual behavior.
According to flight communications, the passenger informed crew members that she was taking medication for mental health conditions. Shortly thereafter, she handed handwritten notes to flight attendants explicitly requesting asylum in Canada.
The flight deck assured air traffic control and flight operations that the individual posed no threat to the aircraft or its passengers, describing her as calm and seated. The pilots elected to continue to the destination as scheduled rather than divert.
The aircraft, an Airbus A319 registered as C-FYJE, touched down safely in Montreal approximately four hours after departing Phoenix.
