LOS ANGELES — An American Airlines transpacific flight carrying passengers from New York to Tokyo was forced to make an unexpected, long-distance diversion to California following a technical issue encountered near the Arctic circle.

American Airlines Flight AA167 took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York at 10:45 AM EDT (14:45 UTC) on Wednesday, September 23. The aircraft, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner registered under tail number N824AN, climbed to its planned cruising altitude of 34,000 feet and proceeded on its scheduled polar route, tracking across the full expanse of Canada.

Roughly five hours into the journey, as the aircraft approached the border of Alaska, flight crews identified a technical malfunction. Rather than continuing across the Pacific ocean, the crew altered their flight path, initiating a sharp left turn back toward the continental United States.

Instead of selecting closer diversion hubs such as Vancouver or Seattle, the airline’s Flight Operations Center directed the widebody jet to fly south all the way to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Operations centers frequently choose major hub airports like LAX for complex diversions to ensure adequate maintenance staffing, replacement aircraft availability, and better accommodation facilities for stranded passengers.

After remaining airborne for more than 10 hours and covering thousands of miles, the Dreamliner landed safely at LAX shortly after 5:00 PM PDT on September 23 (00:00 UTC, September 24).

According to airline operations, the aircraft is undergoing maintenance inspection to resolve the technical issue. The stranded passengers are scheduled to resume their journey to Tokyo Haneda Airport later this afternoon, September 24.
