DUBLIN — A Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 bound for the United States was forced to declare an emergency and divert to Dublin Airport on Thursday after turning back mid-flight over Scotland.

Flight LH430 departed Frankfurt Airport at 11:00 CEST, scheduled for a nine-hour crossing to Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Shortly after turning back, the flight crew transmitted squawk code 7700—the international aviation signal for an emergency—to air traffic control. The aircraft, a Boeing 747-800 registered as D-ABYG, immediately began a descent toward Ireland.
