Airline passengers flying to Turkey now face fines if they stand up before the seatbelt sign is turned off after landing, according to new regulations.
The directive was introduced following numerous complaints from travelers about fellow passengers standing prematurely and retrieving overhead baggage before the aircraft is safely parked.
Although the official guidelines from the authority do not specify a penalty amount, Turkish media outlets report that offenders could be fined approximately US$70 (£50). The rules came into effect earlier this month.
The aviation authority cited a “serious increase” in such incidents and now requires airlines to reinforce the rule through in-flight announcements. Cabin crew must inform passengers to remain seated with seatbelts fastened and to avoid opening overhead bins until the seatbelt sign is switched off.
Passengers who disregard the rule must be reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
Turkish Airlines has already updated its landing announcements. The airline now warns: “Passengers who do not comply with the rules will be reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation through a Disruptive Passenger Report, and an administrative fine will be imposed in accordance with the applicable legal regulations.”
