A United Airlines transatlantic flight bound for New Jersey was forced to make an unexpected U-turn over the Atlantic Ocean and return to Ireland on Monday following a mechanical issue.

DUBLIN — United Airlines flight UA22, a regularly scheduled service from Dublin Airport (DUB) to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), departed its gate 40 minutes behind schedule at 10:10 AM IST today. The aircraft, a 24-year-old Boeing 777-200 registered as N227UA, took off smoothly from Dublin’s runway 28R and climbed to its cruising altitude of 35,000 feet.

However, just one hour into the journey—while traversing the North Atlantic airspace between Ireland and Iceland—the flight crew detected a mechanical anomaly.

Faced with a technical issue over open water, the pilots made the decision to abort the crossing and return to Dublin. The widebody jet turned around and safely touched down on Dublin’s runway 28L exactly two hours after its initial departure.

According to tracking data and initial reports from AIRLIVE, the decision to return was prompted by a suspected fluid leak.

Upon landing, the aircraft was met by maintenance teams. United Airlines engineers are currently evaluating the source and severity of the leak before the aircraft can be cleared to depart again. Passengers can expect significant delays or rebooking as the airline works to resolve the technical issue.
