A flight from San Francisco was forced to abandon its long-haul journey after smoke and a strong burning odor filled the cabin shortly after takeoff.

Tuesday, November 18 2025, United Airlines flight UA869, carrying 336 passengers, had only recently departed when travelers reported seeing smoke outside their windows and smelling fumes inside the aircraft. The unexpected incident caused alarm among those on board as the smell spread throughout the cabin.

A United Airlines spokesperson told said that the pilot decided to return to San Francisco as a precaution. “The flight taxied back to the gate where emergency personnel met the aircraft,” the spokesperson said.

Flight data shows the Boeing 777-300ER (registration N2250U) had already been delayed more than 90 minutes before its 1:15 p.m. departure and was airborne for roughly an hour before turning back.

The captain informed passengers that he was returning to the airport due to the smell of smoke, with fire crews standing by upon landing.

United Airlines later arranged for passengers to continue their journey to Hong Kong on a different aircraft Tuesday evening.
