A United Airlines flight to Munich returned to Washington Dulles Airport after In-Flight Engine Failure
A United Airlines flight bound for Munich was forced to return to Washington Dulles International Airport shortly after takeoff on Friday, July 25, following a reported engine failure.
Flight UA108, operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (registration N27901), had just departed from runway 30 at Dulles Airport and was climbing through 6,000 feet when the flight crew reported a malfunction in the aircraft’s left engine and promptly coordinated with air traffic control to initiate an emergency return.
The aircraft flew northwest of Washington to safely dump fuel, managing the aircraft’s weight before landing. ATC asked the pilots how long they intended to hold or how much fuel they planned to dump. Controllers issued vector instructions to ensure safe separation from other traffic while the crew jettisoned fuel.
The aircraft landed safely after Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach to Runway 19C. However, due to the engine failure, it was unable to taxi and had to be towed from the runway.
