The flight BA177 departed London Heathrow runway 27L and climbed to 35,000 ft before turned around over Atlantic after 2 hours into the flight.
The Boeing 777-300ER (registration G-STBB) descended to 29,000 ft and headed to the West coast of Ireland due to a medical emergency on board.
The flight landed in Shannon 3 hours and 30 minutes after departure.
The airline is planning to refuel and to resume the flight to New York at 18:00.
