ZAKYNTHOS, Greece — A Hellenic Air Force (HAF) F-16C Fighting Falcon executed a successful emergency landing at Zakynthos International Airport “Dionysios Solomos” on Thursday afternoon, following an unspecified technical issue mid-flight.

The incident occurred on July 9, 2026, when the fighter jet was forced to divert to the southern Greek island’s commercial airport.

According to eyewitnesses and airport officials, drama unfolded immediately upon touchdown. As the aircraft made contact with the runway, visible flames erupted beneath the fuselage, prompting an immediate and coordinated response from the airfield’s emergency services.

Airport firefighters, who were already on high alert and positioned along the strip, intercepted the fighter jet within seconds. The emergency crews successfully suppressed and extinguished the flames before the fire could breach the fuel tanks or compromise the aircraft’s primary structure.

Military and local authorities confirmed that the pilot, whose identity has not been released, managed to bring the multi-million dollar jet to a complete stop safely. The pilot walked away from the incident entirely uninjured.

The Hellenic Air Force has launched an investigation into the root cause of the malfunction and subsequent fire. Zakynthos International Airport experienced brief operational delays while emergency teams cleared the runway, but normal flight schedules have since resumed.
