RAF and French Air Force flypast over London on Thursday

Today, 8th May 2020, the Red Arrows marked the 75th Anniversary of VE Day during the Corona Virus pandemic by performing multiple flypasts, namely over the capital. London. Images were captured from the back seat of Red 8s jet, image shows the jets above Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament.Victory in Europe Day, generally known as VE Day (United Kingdom) or V-E Day (USA), is a day celebrating the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender of its armed forces on Tuesday, 8 May 1945.Upon the defeat of Germany, celebrations erupted throughout the western world, especially in the UK and North America. More than one million people celebrated in the streets throughout the UK to mark the end of the European part of the war. In London, crowds massed in Trafalgar Square and up the Mall to Buckingham Palace, where King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, accompanied by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, appeared on the balcony of the palace before the cheering crowds. In his radio broadcast at 15:00 on the 8th, Churchill told the British people that: "We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing (as Japan) remains unsubdued".75 years on and the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team – The Red Arrows fly over the capital (London) celebrating. The 2020 75th celebrations are somewhat different to previous VE celebrations while the UK are currently in lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. However the occasion is of national importance and couldn’t pass without being honoured.Officially known as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows showcase the excellence of the RAF and represent the United Kingdom both at home and overseas. The team consists of 11 pilots, nine of whom fly in the display, and more than 100 support personnel and technicians. The RAF and the French Air Force will fly over London Heathrow to commemorate the 80th anniversary of General Charles de Gaulle’s appeal for French resistance.

On Thursday, both the RAF and the French Air Force are planning a special flypast of 18 aircraft over Heathrow. The event will commemorate the 80th anniversary of General Charles de Gaulle’s appeal for French resistance. French president Emmanuel Macro is expected to visit UK for face-to-face visits with Prince Charles and Boris Johnson.

Both countries will send their national display teams, the Red Arrows from the RAF and the Patrouille de France which will join up to perform this special flypast.
