NANCY, France — A French Air Force Mirage 2000D fighter jet crashed late Tuesday night while returning to the Nancy-Ochey Air Base in northeastern France. Authorities confirmed Wednesday morning that one body has been recovered at the crash site as emergency response teams continue search-and-rescue operations.

Loss of Radar Contact and Nighttime Impact

The two-seat ground-attack jet lost radio and radar contact around 10:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday during its final approach following a nighttime training mission.

Local residents in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department reported hearing a loud explosion and observing a fireball falling from the sky near Pont-à-Mousson, located roughly 15 kilometers west of the area, shortly before emergency services were alerted.

Investigation Underway

The French Air and Space Force (Armée de l’Air et de l’Espace) has launched an immediate investigation into the cause of the incident. Officials from the Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for State Aviation Safety (BEA-É) are deploying to inspect the wreckage and determine whether the crash was caused by a mechanical failure, sudden atmospheric conditions, or spatial disorientation during the night flight.

A press briefing by defense officials and local authorities is scheduled for 9AM to provide further details regarding the status of the crew and preliminary findings.

Military authorities have cordoned off the crash perimeter to preserve evidence and secure remaining ordnance or hazardous materials on board the aircraft.
