A serious runway incursion occurred early Monday morning at MEX Airport involving an Aeromexico E190 and a Delta Boeing 737-800 on runway 05R.
Mexico City, July 21, 2025 — According to initial reports, early Monday morning, Aeroméxico Connect Flight AM1631, operating an Embraer E190 (registration XA-ALP) from Aguascalientes, was on final approach to land on Runway 05R when Delta Air Lines Flight DL590, a Boeing 737-800 (registration N3766) bound for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, was cleared to enter and begin its takeoff roll on the same runway.
Both aircraft were simultaneously occupying the critical portion of the runway, creating a dangerous situation with the potential for a high-speed collision.
What Happened
Sources within the airport operations confirmed that Flight AMX1631 was in its landing phase when Flight DL590 began accelerating down the runway for departure. At this stage of flight, both aircraft are operating at high speeds, reducing reaction time significantly and raising the risk of a catastrophic event.
Air traffic control recordings and flight tracking data indicate that the Aeroméxico aircraft was seconds away from touchdown when the Delta jet was already moving down the runway. The exact separation distance between the two aircraft at the time of the incursion is yet to be disclosed, but reports suggest it was dangerously close.
According to data from flight tracking websites, the Aeroméxico jet didn’t performed a go-around maneuver and continued its landing on runway 05R while the Delta flight aborted its takeoff and finally departed 2 hours late.

Authorities Respond
The incident, which took place at approximately 7:30 a.m. local time, is now under investigation by Mexican aviation authorities and the airlines involved.
In a brief statement, Delta said, “Flight 590 from Mexico City was involved in a runway incursion incident during departure. The flight proceeded safely and without delay.”
Aeroméxico also issued a statement affirming their aircraft followed all ATC instructions and emphasized that the safety of passengers and crew is their top priority.
