A Bell 206L-4 LongRanger IV helicopter crashed Thursday into the Hudson River just off Manhattan, authorities said. The fire department said it received a report of a helicopter in the water at 3:17 p.m.
The helicopter, registered as N216MH, was tracked by AirNav ADS-B system, which recorded its final position at 19:14:50 UTC, showing the helicopter descending rapidly at a rate of -3,456 feet per minute.
The helicopter plunged into the water near Pier 40, missing its rotors, pointing to a possible mechanical failure. The crash site is close to the Holland Tunnel area, with the aircraft ending up mostly submerged and upside down.
Around 3:17 PM ET, a helicopter carrying six people—a pilot, two adults, and three children, all Spanish tourists—crashed after being airborne for about 12 minutes. Tragically, all on board perished.
Emergency response was swift, with the NYPD, FDNY, and rescue boats on scene. Despite their efforts, no survivors were found, highlighting the incident’s severity. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause.
