LONDON — A British Airways Boeing 777 flying from Thailand requested priority handling into London Gatwick Airport on Monday morning after encountering holding delays combined with dense fog and tight fuel margins.

Flight BA2230, operated by a Boeing 777-200ER (registration G-YMMA), had departed Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport late Sunday, October 18, following initial departure delays.

Upon arriving in UK airspace early Monday, October 19, the long-haul flight was instructed by Air Traffic Control (ATC) to enter a holding pattern near Gatwick. The holding delay was driven by a combination of heavy morning traffic and severely reduced visibility at the airport, with runway visual range fluctuating between 400 and 900 meters due to thick morning fog.

Recognizing the limited fuel reserve following the long flight and pre-existing departure delay, the flight crew informed ATC that the aircraft did not have excessive fuel to endure an extended hold. Pilots requested priority vectoring for landing, warning controllers that if low visibility triggered a go-around or prolonged delay, a diversion to an alternate airport might become necessary.

Air traffic controllers responded by clearing the widebody jet out of the holding stack and vectoring it directly onto the final approach path.

Flight BA2230 landed safely on Gatwick’s Runway 08R at approximately 07:00 BST. The aircraft taxied to the gate without further incident, and passengers disembarked normally.
