Passengers on a Delta Air Lines flight experienced an unforgettable journey on on Friday night when a fellow traveler gave birth mid-air, just 30 minutes before the aircraft made an emergency landing.
Delta Flight DL478 was en route to its destination when a woman went into labor unexpectedly. Fortunately for the mother-to-be, the passenger manifest included a doctor and two nurses who immediately stepped forward to assist.
Working alongside the Delta flight attendants, the medical team transformed the cabin into a makeshift delivery room at 30,000 feet. The baby was successfully delivered roughly half an hour before the plane touched down.
Emergency Landing in Portland
Upon news of the medical situation, the flight crew declared an emergency and diverted the aircraft to Portland (PDX). The plane landed safely, where it was met on the tarmac by emergency medical services.
“It was pretty wild,” one passenger remarked, describing the mixture of tension and cheers that filled the cabin once the healthy baby’s first cries were heard over the hum of the jet engines.
“The Ultimate Souvenir”
Delta Air Lines confirmed the incident in a statement, praising the quick actions of the crew and the medical professionals on board.
Both the mother and the newborn were transported to a local hospital upon landing and are reported to be in stable condition. While the baby’s citizenship and “place of birth” remain a technicality for the authorities to iron out, fellow passengers are calling the child’s arrival the ultimate travel story.
