An Airbus A330 to Detroit returned to London Heathrow after crew declared an emergency.

The Delta Air Lines flight DL17 departed London Heathrow Airport today to Detroit.

The Airbus 330-200 (registration N854NW) departed from runway 27L at 11:39 BST for a flight of 8 hours and 20 minutes to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.

The pilots stopped the climb at 26,000 feet and and turned around. The crew declared a general emergency (squawk 7700) to require priority landing.

EMERGENCY: In the past few minutes,Delta flight #DL17 returned to London Heathrow originally scheduled for Detroit.
Emergency vehicles approached the A330 after vacating the runway.

The flight landed safely on runway 27R only 57 minutes after departure. Emergency vehicles met the aircraft after it vacated the runway. The plane then taxied to terminal 3.
