An Emirates flight bound for San Francisco made a U-turn over northern Russia on Wednesday, diverting more than 2,000 miles off its normal polar route to land at London Heathrow Airport.

LONDON — Flight EK225, operated by a flagship Airbus A380-800 (registration A6-EVH), departed Dubai International Airport (DXB) on Wednesday, July 29, at 10:26 AM GST. The flight, which normally takes around 16 hours to cross the Arctic and Canada before reaching the U.S. West Coast, was roughly six hours into its journey and cruising high over northern Russia near Nyagan when pilots initiated a left turn back toward Western Europe.

A 4,000-Kilometer Detour

After banking left away from its scheduled Arctic trajectory, the superjumbo flew for an additional five hours across European airspace before touching down safely at London Heathrow (LHR) at 7:20 PM local time.

While a flight spent nearly 12 hours airborne only to land in Western Europe is far longer than a standard seven-hour hop between Dubai and London, long-haul diversions often balance multiple operational variables, including medical emergencies, ground infrastructure, and passenger logistics.

“Emirates flight EK225 from Dubai to San Francisco on July 29 has been diverted to London Heathrow due to a passenger medical emergency,” an Emirates spokesperson said.

Why London Heathrow?

When long-haul flights encounter emergencies in remote airspace, flight crews must select a diversion airport capable of handling massive widebody aircraft like the A380. London Heathrow is one of Emirates’ largest international outstations, hosting six daily A380 flights. This extensive presence provides the airline with dedicated ground crews, existing maintenance capabilities, and extensive hotel and rebooking options for hundreds of affected passengers.
