PHOENIX — A United Airlines commercial flight carrying 154 passengers and six crew members made an unusual emergency landing at Luke Air Force Base on Monday evening after severe monsoon storms and temporary airport closures prevented it from reaching its destination.

United Airlines Flight UA2078, operated by a Boeing 737-900 (registration N71411), departed George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston bound for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). After approximately two and a half hours in the air, the jet entered a holding pattern southeast of Phoenix as heavy thunderstorms swept across the Valley, bringing severe wind gusts, rain, and reduced visibility.

Unexpected Military Detour

As weather conditions deteriorated around Sky Harbor, air traffic controllers issued a ground stop, halting incoming traffic. With fuel reserves running low after circling near the airport, the flight crew declared a minimum fuel emergency.

Faced with diminishing fuel and limited immediate alternatives in the storm’s path, the crew coordinated with air traffic control and military personnel to divert to Luke Air Force Base—a major U.S. Air Force installation located roughly 25 miles west of Phoenix in Glendale, Arizona.

“Due to severe weather in the Phoenix area on Monday night, the crew of United flight 2078 from Houston to Phoenix elected to land at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona as the safest course of action,” a United Airlines spokesperson said in a statement. “The crew worked with air traffic controllers and the flight landed uneventfully.”

Following a safe touchdown at the military base, passengers remained on board while United Airlines ground teams and Air Force personnel coordinated transport.

Passengers Reached Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

Buses were dispatched to transport all passengers and crew members from the base to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to complete their journey.
