SHANNON, Ireland — A United Airlines transatlantic flight bound for the United States was forced to make an emergency diversion to Ireland on Saturday following technical complications over the Atlantic Ocean.

United Airlines Flight UA509, which departed from Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) on July 11, 2026, was en route to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) when the flight crew declared an emergency. The aircraft, a 24-year-old Boeing 767-400ER registered as N76065, was carrying 227 passengers and crew members.

Mid-Air Complications

The flight initially proceeded normally, cruising at an altitude of 32,000 feet as it crossed French airspace. However, roughly three hours into the journey, just as the aircraft began its crossing over the Atlantic Ocean, the flight crew noted unusual vibrations coming from the right-hand engine. Concurrently, an unfamiliar odour was detected on board the aircraft.

Faced with overlapping engine and cabin environment issues, the flight crew elected to abort the transatlantic crossing. Aviation tracking data shows the aircraft executing a right turn, redirecting its flight path toward Ireland.

Safe Landing in Shannon

The pilots initiated a descent and reduced the affected right engine to idle to mitigate further damage or risk. The flight diverted to Shannon Airport (SNN) on the west coast of Ireland, a frequent safe-haven for transatlantic flights experiencing mid-ocean technical issues.

Approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes after taking off from Rome, the Boeing 767 touched down safely on Shannon’s Runway 06. Emergency services met the aircraft upon arrival as a standard precautionary measure.

United Airlines confirmed that all 227 individuals on board disembarked the aircraft normally and without injury. The remainder of Flight UA509 was subsequently cancelled while maintenance teams began inspecting the 24-year-old airframe and its right engine to determine the root cause of the vibrations and odour. Passengers were provided with assistance and rebooked on alternative flights.
