An Austrian Airlines flight traveling from Vienna to Newark was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Newfoundland on Tuesday afternoon following a suspected medical emergency over the Atlantic.

ST. JOHN’S, NL – Flight OS37, operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner (registration OE-LPM), departed Vienna International Airport at 10:39 CET. The aircraft was roughly seven hours into its journey and cruising at 39,000 feet over the Labrador Sea when the crew notified air traffic control of a situation on board.

In the interest of passenger safety, the pilots opted to divert to St. John’s International Airport (YYT), the closest suitable major airfield for an emergency landing.

Timeline of Events

The diversion added several hours to the journey, but the aircraft was able to resume its flight to the United States shortly after the situation was addressed on the ground.
