United Airlines flight to Honolulu returned to Newark after fuel dump.

NEWARK, NJ — A United Airlines flight bound for the Hawaiian Islands was forced to abort its journey and return to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) on Saturday morning following a reported safety concern shortly after takeoff.

Incident Details

United Airlines Flight UA363, a long-haul service to Honolulu (HNL), departed Newark at approximately 9:37 AM EST. The flight was operated by a Boeing 767-400ER (registration N66056).

Shortly into the initial climb, the flight crew notified air traffic control of a “safety-related issue” that prevented the aircraft from continuing its trans-Pacific crossing.

To ensure a safe landing weight, the wide-body aircraft was required to dump fuel before returning to the airport.

Emergency Return and Landing

The aircraft reached an altitude of 28,000 feet before descending to 21,000 feet and maneuvering to vent fuel. This is a standard procedure for long-haul flights that are heavily laden with fuel, as landing overweight can cause structural damage to the airframe or landing gear.

  • Landing Time: The aircraft touched down safely at Newark Liberty at 11:39 AM EST, 1 hour and 30 minutes after departure.
  • Ground Response: Emergency vehicles were on standby as a precaution, though the landing was completed without further incident.
  • Gate Arrival: The plane taxied back to the terminal, where passengers were deplaned.

“United flight 363 returned to Newark shortly after takeoff to address a safety issue,” a United Airlines spokesperson confirmed. “The aircraft landed safely and we are making arrangements to get our customers to their destination as quickly as possible.”

Impact on Passengers

Travelers on the 11-hour flight to Honolulu faced significant delays as United worked to inspect the 24-year-old Boeing 767.

While the specific nature of the safety issue was not immediately disclosed, the aircraft remained on the ground for maintenance. A replacement flight was organized to transport the passengers to Hawaii later with a delay of 8 hours and 50 minutes.
