KLM flight from Amsterdam to Lima turned around over the Azores, in middle of Atlantic Ocean.

The KKM Boeing 777-300ER (registration PH-BVO) has just turned around over The Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal, are an archipelago in the mid-Atlantic.

The flight departed Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, gate E19, at 10:09 CEST for a flight duration of 12 hours and 30 minutes to Lima, Peru’s captal.

According to our source, the flight is returning to Amsterdam due to smoke in the cabin, expected to land 7 hours after departure.

Overview of the KLM Boeing 777 Fleet

As of early 2025, KLM operates two variants of the Boeing 777:

  • Boeing 777-200ER
  • Boeing 777-300ER

1. Boeing 777-200ER

The Boeing 777-200ER (Extended Range) was the first of the 777 family to enter KLM’s fleet in the early 2000s. It is a versatile long-haul aircraft, offering excellent range and fuel efficiency for medium to long-distance routes.

  • Fleet Size: Approximately 15 aircraft
  • Passenger Capacity: Around 320 passengers (in a 3-class configuration)
  • Range: Up to 13,000 km (8,078 miles)
  • Typical Routes: Nairobi, Mumbai, Quito, and smaller North American and Asian cities

The 777-200ERs have been continuously updated, featuring newer in-flight entertainment systems and refreshed interiors as part of KLM’s commitment to passenger comfort.

2. Boeing 777-300ER

The 777-300ER (Extended Range) is a stretched version offering increased capacity while maintaining similar long-range capabilities. It is currently the largest aircraft in KLM’s fleet.

  • Fleet Size: Around 16 aircraft
  • Passenger Capacity: About 408 passengers (in a 3-class configuration)
  • Range: Approximately 13,650 km (8,481 miles)
  • Typical Routes: New York, São Paulo, Tokyo, Cape Town, and other high-demand destinations

The 777-300ER is known for its efficiency and lower operating costs per seat, making it ideal for KLM’s busiest intercontinental routes.
